We are saddened to announce the passing of Jacques Duane Mumma on August 16, 2016 from a heart attack and complications due to complex gastric surgery. He was 73 years old.
Born on June 16, 1943, to parents Howard and Thelma Mumma of Lancaster, PA, Jack attended J.P. McCaskey High School (class of â61). He then went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree from Franklin & Marshall College (class of â65), and his Master's Degree from Penn State University (class of â67).
In 1972, Jackâalong with his lifelong best friend, Bruce Brinserâwon a National Scrabble Tournament in Princeton, NJ, besting 17 other two-person teams.
He spent his entire 34 year professional career in Mansfield, PA, where he taught classes and served as a member of the Mathematics Department at Mansfield University. He also was a fixture at the informal dinner club, comprised largely of professorsâ families, known as âThe Mayansâ.
In 2001, he retired to Melbourne, FL, where he continued to enjoy his leisure pasttimes of tennis, gardening, and reading.
Jack is survived by his wife of 49 years, Stephanie Lou (Née Miller) Mumma of Melbourne, FL; his son, Duane Jackson Mumma of Drexel Hill, PA; a brother, Neil Mumma of Coplay, PA; as well as one niece, one nephew, and four grand-nieces.
