Sonya Waitherwerch, age 93 of Satellite Beach, Florida passed away on Friday, July 7, 2017.
Sonya was born on November 11, 1923 in the town of Sloviansk in the USSR to the late Ivan and Ekaterina Kostenko.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Francis J. Waitherwerch who passed away in 1983 and brother, Constantine Kostenko.
Sonya is survived by one son, Francis (Darlene) Waitherwerch; one daughter, Tina (James Van Gaasbeck); three grandsons, Marc (Lupe) Waitherwerch, Jim and Steven Van Gaasbeck; one granddaughter Victoria Van Gaasbeck; one great-grandson Marcos Waitherwerch and one great-granddaughter Lalia Waitherwerch.
Sonya suffered much hardship during WWII during the German occupation. After the war she met and married her American soldier husband, Francis, in Austria 1947. They lived in Europe, Japan, and Hawaii as an Air Force family before retiring in Satellite Beach, Florida in 1972.
Sonya loved traveling and meeting people. 'A stranger was just a friend she hadn’t met’
She will always be remembered it love a a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
